How to GIB Stop Plasterboard

Learn how to GIB stop plasterboard step by step, from joint preparation and tape to top coat, drying and sanding. Includes common mistakes and pro tips.

Before you start: A small patch or short joint can be a realistic DIY project. Whole rooms, ceilings, square stopping, butt joints, Level 5 finishes and areas with strong critical lighting are much less forgiving.

If you search how to GIB stop, it can look simple: put plaster over the joint, sand it and paint. In practice, the quality comes from preparation, tape reinforcement, controlled coat widths, clean tools, correct drying and light sanding. Too much compound in the wrong place creates more work, not a better finish.

Tools and Materials Typically Used

You will typically need the appropriate GIB jointing or setting compound, GIB paper tape or the reinforcing tape specified for the system, broad knives or trowels in progressively wider sizes, and a clean mixing container.

Internal and external corner tools or approved stopping beads may be required. Fine sanding paper or sanding screen, good inspection lighting, eye protection and a suitable dust mask or respirator are important for the sanding stage.

Step 1: Inspect the Plasterboard Before Stopping

The finished joint can only be as good as the lining underneath it. Check that the plasterboard is properly fixed, screw heads are seated just below the paper surface without breaking it, and damaged edges or large gaps have been dealt with correctly.

Fix proud screws, repair broken corners and damaged board face, remove dust and loose paper, and fill large gaps or voids with the appropriate setting material before normal jointing.

Step 2: Mix or Prepare the Compound Correctly

With powdered setting compound, use clean water and clean equipment and mix only what can be used within the product's working time. Do not keep adding water to material that has already started to set.

Premixed air-drying products should also be kept clean and used according to their label instructions. Compound that is too stiff is hard to apply cleanly; excessively wet compound can shrink more and take longer to dry.

Step 3: Apply the First Coat and Embed the Tape

Fill the recessed joint with base compound, centre the jointing tape over the joint, then press it firmly into the compound. The objective is to remove trapped air while leaving enough material behind the tape to create a strong bond.

Keep the tape centred and straight. Do not scrape so hard that all compound is removed from behind the tape. Cover the tape with a controlled thin coat and clean the edges rather than leaving large ridges.

Step 4: Apply the Second Coat Wider Than the First

After the first stage reaches the condition required by the system, apply a wider second coat. Feather the outer edges tightly to the board surface. This widens the transition and reduces the angle of the joint so it is less visible after painting.

Butt joints need significantly wider feathering than factory-tapered joints because there is no recessed channel to accept the compound build-up.

Step 5: Stop Internal and External Corners

Internal corners need straight reinforcing and clean feathering on both sides. External corners normally use the appropriate metal or proprietary angle or bead to form a durable straight edge.

Corners are where DIY work commonly becomes visibly uneven. Check them from multiple viewing angles before the final coat.

Step 6: Apply the Finishing Coat

The finishing coat should be wider and finer than the base coats. Its purpose is to create a smooth transition and a surface that can be lightly sanded—not to bury the joint under a thick mound of compound.

Use clean tools and avoid repeated trowel passes once the material starts to drag. Tool marks left in the finishing coat increase sanding and can damage the board face if removed aggressively.

Step 7: Allow the Compound to Dry Fully

An air-drying finishing compound typically requires at least 24 hours in suitable conditions, and cold or damp rooms can take longer. A thick patch can remain moist beneath a dry-looking surface.

In Wellington's cooler seasons, ventilation and moderate room temperature are important. Do not schedule painting simply because a fixed number of hours has passed—check that the compound is actually dry.

Step 8: Sand Lightly with Fine Abrasive

Once the finishing compound is completely dry, lightly sand in the direction of the joint using fine abrasive. The aim is to remove small tool marks and blend the edge, not to grind the joint flat by removing large amounts of material.

Use dust control and personal protection. Avoid sanding through the plasterboard face paper, do not create a hollow joint by over-sanding, and remove sanding dust before sealing or painting.

Step 9: Inspect the Surface Before Painting

Look for ridges, pock marks, pinholes, scratches, torn paper and uneven corners. Inspection should reflect the lighting the finished room will actually experience.

If the room has large windows, skylights, wall-wash lighting, dark colours or semi-gloss paint, the required level of finish may need to be higher than a standard repair.

Step 10: Seal the Plasterboard Before Finish Coats

New joint compound and plasterboard face paper have different porosity. The correct sealer or primer creates a more consistent base for the paint system. Use the coating manufacturer's specification for the wall, room type and finish selected.

Common GIB Stopping Mistakes

Skipping tape is not a substitute for reinforcing a normal plasterboard joint. Applying coats too thickly increases drying time, shrinkage and sanding. Setting compound should not be retempered and reused after it starts to harden.

Other common mistakes include painting too early, over-sanding, ignoring butt joints, expecting paint to hide defects, and using extreme work lights as the only inspection method. Finished rooms should be assessed in realistic lighting and to the specified level of finish.

When DIY Stopping Is Reasonable—and When It Is Not

Small dents, minor local repairs, a short accessible joint and low-visibility utility areas can be suitable for a capable DIYer. Whole rooms, ceilings, square stopping, architectural details, Level 5 finishes, large butt joints and new-to-existing renovation transitions are usually better handled by a professional.

Professional help is also worthwhile in rooms with strong critical lighting or dark, high-sheen paint where small surface variations become obvious.
