Quick definition: GIB stopping is the process of finishing plasterboard after it has been fixed to walls or ceilings. Jointing tape and compound are applied over sheet joints, screw heads, corners and other details, then the surface is sanded and prepared so it can be sealed and painted.
When new plasterboard goes up, the sheets are visible and the joints between them are not ready for paint. GIB stopping turns those separate sheets into a continuous-looking surface. In New Zealand, it is also called plastering, stopping, GIB plastering or plasterboard jointing.
What Does a GIB Stopper Actually Do?

Stopping also includes blending patches, new-to-existing plasterboard and renovation repairs into the surrounding surface. Modern interiors may include square-stopped ceilings, reveals and other details that require accurate straight lines and careful finishing.
GIB Fixing, GIB Stopping and Painting: What Is the Difference?
GIB fixing is the installation stage: sheets are measured, cut and fastened to wall or ceiling framing. The wall is lined, but joints and fixings are still visible.
GIB stopping is the finishing stage: joints are taped, coated, feathered, corners are finished, and the surface is dried and sanded. Painting comes after that, with the appropriate sealer or primer followed by the specified finish coats.
How Does the GIB Stopping Process Work?
Preparation comes first. The stopper checks board fixing, screw depth, damaged edges, gaps and cleanliness before jointing begins.
A base coat is applied and paper or approved jointing tape is embedded through the joint. A second coat is applied wider than the first, followed by a wider, fine finishing coat to minimise the transition between the joint and board face.
After drying, the surface is lightly sanded and inspected. The goal is not a thick ridge over every joint; it is a smooth, gradual feathered transition that the eye cannot detect after painting.
What Are Level 4 and Level 5 Finishes?
Level 4 is generally used where normal, non-critical lighting falls on flat, low-sheen or similar paint systems. It requires properly finished joints, corners and fixings.
Level 5 is a higher specification for critical lighting, dark colours or higher-sheen finishes. It builds on Level 4 and includes a skim coat over the plasterboard surface to create more consistent texture and porosity.
A Level 5 finish is not simply more sanding. Framing, sheet layout, jointing system, lighting and full-surface preparation all influence the final appearance.
Why Does GIB Stopping Quality Matter?
Poor feathering can leave ridges and shadows that become obvious after paint is applied. Incorrect joint preparation, inadequate reinforcement or movement can contribute to cracking later.
Large windows, skylights, downlights and grazing light expose small surface variations. Semi-gloss, dark colours and some modern lighting conditions are less forgiving than flat, light-coloured finishes.
Renovation transitions also need care. Blending new plasterboard into an older wall often requires more preparation than stopping a clean new-build wall.
How Long Does GIB Stopping Take?
The labour itself is only part of the programme. Several coats may be required and each stage needs sufficient setting or drying time. Air-drying finishing compounds typically need at least 24 hours to dry under suitable conditions, with longer times in cold or damp environments.
A small patch may be completed over a short sequence of visits. A full house, multiple rooms, high ceilings or a Level 5 finish requires more labour and drying time. Weather and ventilation can make a noticeable difference in Wellington winters.
Can You Paint Straight Over New GIB Board?
No. Newly fixed plasterboard still has visible sheet joints, fixing heads and corners. Those areas must be stopped and finished first.
After the compound is completely dry and the surface has been sanded and cleaned, the wall is sealed or primed as required by the paint system before finish coats are applied.
Is GIB Stopping the Same as Skim Coating?
Not exactly. Standard GIB stopping concentrates on joints, fixings, angles and details. Skim coating applies a thin layer across a much larger area—or the entire surface—to create more consistent texture and porosity or improve an existing surface.
A Level 5 plasterboard finish includes a full-surface skim coat as part of the specification.
GIB Stopping in Renovations
Renovation work often has extra variables: old paint, previous repairs, uneven framing, damaged plasterboard, removed walls, new door openings, electrical changes and new-to-existing sheet junctions.
Before pricing, establish whether the job is a local patch, a full re-stop, a skim coat or complete replacement of damaged board. A visible crack may be cosmetic, or it may indicate movement that should be addressed before plastering.
